LESSONS

When and where are lessons held?

Lessons are held on a weekly basis in my home-studio in River Falls, WI.

What will I learn in my lessons?

As a Suzuki teacher, I primarily teach the Suzuki Method, but also bring in methodology from my years and experience in music education.   I am here to help you meet your musical goals.  Want to brush up for an audition? Support your school ensemble instruction with private lessons? Begin learning from the beginning?  I am here to help you grow in whatever stage of musicianship you find yourself in!

FAQ's

What instruments and ability levels do you teach?

I teach the violin and viola to students ranging from 4 years of age through adulthood.  I can confidently teach beginners through advanced players who are looking to continue their musical growth.

Do I need to purchase an instrument?

I encourage my students to rent their instruments until they are on a full size instrument.   Violins and Violas come in different sizes, so as your child grows you can trade in your rental instrument for the next size up.  I recommend either renting through River Fall's local music store, Brickhouse Music, or online through Potter's Violins https://potterviolins.com/rentals/.  It is important to rent your child's instrument from a reputable music store, a solid, well made instrument is crucial in supporting your child's developing musicianship.

What are the expectations for parents?

In the Suzuki Method, parents are the "home teacher."  As such, learning the violin is a partnership between the child and the parent, especially in the early years of learning the instrument. Parents are expected to attend every lesson with their child.  I encourage parents to take notes, photos or short videos to help aid in remembering what to practice later at home.

"Do I have to practice with my child every day? I am a working parent and I don't know if I will have time."

While I encourage my students to practice daily, I understand that is not always possible.  I require my students to practice a minimum of 15-30 minutes (depending on age, level of musicianship etc.) four days a week.  Consistent practice yields results. If you are willing to take the time with your child, you will grow your relationship with them, foster a deep connection and love of music together and create memories that will last a lifetime.  Some of my fondest memories with my mom are playing violin games and practicing together.

"My child is too young to start playing the violin."

The Suzuki approach encourages children to begin as young as 3 years old.  Beginning at a young age allows the basics to be taught during the most developmental, mind-forming years.  There are many age appropriate ways to begin teaching your child about music.

"My child is too wiggly, too impatient, too unfocused to start learning to play the violin."

No they aren't! The Suzuki Method is all about teaching to the heart of the child.   Patience, discipline and attention to detail are all cultivated through learning to play the violin. If your child is like this, then the Suzuki Method and the violin are actually perfect for you and your child!

Can we bring little siblings along to the lessons?

Absolutely! Little siblings are always welcome.  I provide a small basket of books for them to page through quietly.  I also encourage parents to bring a few quiet activities for the little ones to play with while the student and parent are participating in the lesson.
